Introduction

Introduction

Me at Disneyland this summer.

Hello faithful readers of this fabulous blog! I hope you have enjoyed my first of many creatively outlandish takes on storytelling.

About Me: My name is Dylan and this is my fourth year at the great University of Oklahoma! I am studying broadcast journalism while minoring in international studies. I play the saxophone in the Pride of Oklahoma and also anchor for OU Nightly. You can watch me this fall live at 4:30 p.m. starting in late September on our website. I am from the small town of Sallisaw, Okla. My family has lived there almost the whole time since moving from different countries in Europe.

Why I'm Taking The Class: To be 100% honest, I really needed an upper division western credit and this sounded like the best option. Now after being in the class for a bit, I absolutely love it! I feel like I am a kid again and have found my creative side. For so long I have been writing facts and figures and depressing news stories, but with this class I am able to let my creativeness flow as much as I want.

Hobbies & Interests: It's no surprise that I love anything and everything related to news. If I'm on my computer or my phone and not working on a project, I'm most likely on a news site trying to absorb everything I can. I am also an avid reader. I really enjoy post apocalyptic dystopian type books where the good guys always win. I studied abroad last summer in the great city of Seville, in Spain and I have completely fell in love with it. I hope one day to go back! My guilty pleasure I would have to say is watching Big Brother on CBS. I absolutely love that show! One of my goals is to become a member one season, but I'm not sure how that will affect my professional goals.

Life Motto: "Do what makes you happy."
In the past 23 years I've been on this earth I have learned quite a few things. The most important is that life is too short not to enjoy yourself. Do something because it makes you happy, not because someone else wants you to. Don't worry what other people think about you because at the end of the day, the people that matter the most won't care.

  1. Hey Dylan!

That's awesome that you're in the Pride of Oklahoma and an anchor for OU Nightly! I can't imagine how busy you are.
I also took this class because I needed an upper division western credit, but I think I'm really going to like it. I especially like the fact that we get to decide what subjects we want to learn about.

I hope your first week of the semester has gone well!

  2. Hi Dylan!
Much like you, I needed an upper division western credit as well. I have enrolled in one almost every semester for about 4 semesters and once I get through the first few days, I drop it because it does not seem interesting or useful at all! Thankfully, this class seems incredible! I am also a huge fan of Big Brother! I record most of my episodes because I never have time to watch them when they play live. Being a student in Gaylord College, I tend to watch OU Nightly a lot, so I look forward to seeing you there!

  3. Hey Dylan!
So cool that you play the saxophone! When I was younger I wanted to play it so badly but then quickly learned that I have no musical talent and had to give up that dream so I'm quite jealous of you! I actually studied abroad in Italy and feel the same way about it that you do about Spain! I also love your life motto and should honestly start living by it too!

  4. I am so glad you are liking the class, Dylan! It's definitely all about being wild and creative with stories... and it's always possible for some creativity to sneak into a news story, along with those facts and figures. News-style storytelling is actually so cool because it allows you to bring together so many different voices: the reporter's voice of course, plus the voices that you weave into the story. Anyway, be sure to let me know when you have a story up at OUNightly later this semester. That will be so cool to share in the announcements! And do you know Kate Greer...? She is a reporter now for KGOU news (Twitter @katecgreer). She did both Myth-Folklore and Indian Epics a few years ago... it's been great watching her go on to tell stories on the radio like that! It's all about storytelling, just in different ways. I hope the class will be a fun adventure for you in the world of stories!

  5. Dearest Dylan,
Creative writing is a strong trait of yours. You make yourself sound really interesting and adventurous on here. I'm glad that I could help you choose journalism as your major! Weird...I play saxophone, too! I bet you're a terrific player. Sallisaw sounds like a fun place to grow up. I didn't know that it was a "small town," but I'll definitely remember that.

    Much Love,
    Your best friend/roomie,

    Kels

  6. Hi Dyan!

I really enjoyed reading your introduction. I can tell you must be pretty creative because you broke it into different sections that I haven't seen on anyone else's website yet. I think that is awesome how you are an anchor on OU Nightly. My boyfriend, London, also works on OU Nightly. Maybe you know him! I'm excited for you because it seems like you really have found a major that matches your passions and goals. Best of luck to you!

  7. Hi Dylan!

I really liked that you included a life motto in your introduction! It is quite humbling and something that I have never thought to do before. Thank you for the idea! I feel since you like post apocalyptic dystopian type novels, you should read the Giver quartet. The books are really well done and play on the philosophical aspect of dystopian societies. I hope you have a good semester!

  8. What's up bro. What kinda graphics did you work on? I really enjoy post apocalyptic dystopian things as well. I also would like to go to Europe but Spain AND France for me. A motto I like is live for the day, plan for tomorrow, party tonight party tonight - thank you Drake for those words of wisdom lol. Thank god 'Yolo' is dead but the concept will always be alive. Stay up bro.

  9. Dylan, I really love your life motto. It took me quite a while to realize that myself. I spent a lot of time doing what others thought I should do and ignoring what I made me happy. Then one day It just hit me, so I hopped onto a plain the Korea, spent three months there, came back and immediately changed my major. Life really is too short to waste doing something that doesn't speak to your heart.

  10. Hey Dylan!
I think it’s really cool that you are in The Pride! There’s not much that I love more than OU football and you guys play a part in that! At every home game I sit right next to you guys. I made the mistake once of sitting next to the drum section… definitely not going to do that again! Good luck with your journalism aspirations!

  11. Your life motto is great! I think that it is especially great for those of us in Gaylord College of Journalism (I am too, but I'm a Professional Writing Major.) I don't know about you, or other majors, but I am always told that it's not a good major etc. (A lot of dream crushers.) But, you know what? We do what we love, so nothing else matters!

Also, I think it's cool how much of a news junkie you are! I used to be like that, but kind of stopped. But I think it is such a valuable thing to be informed about what is going on in our world!

  12. Hi Dylan,

It’s so good to meet you! It sounds like you stay really busy around campus. Congratulations on landing the positions on the OU Nightly! How was Spain? I traveled abroad last summer, too, but I stayed in Italy for a couple weeks instead of Spain. Maybe Spain will be next! You have a great life motto, too! That’s always something good to live by.

  13. Hey Dylan,
It’s cool that you play the saxophone in our Pride of Oklahoma. I wish I could play an instrument of some sort. Being an anchor must be really great experience for you and your major. I am also taking this course because of the need of an upper division western credit. You really are interested in your chosen major since you indulge yourself into watching news and probably picking up tips and skills from the pros. I haven’t seen anything on TV for a long time haha. I kind of miss it but at the same time not really. Hope you have a great semester!

  14. Hi Dylan!!

I actually studied abroad in Spain too but I was in Madrid. I visited Seville and it was absolutely beautiful. Don’t you miss paella? It sounds like you have had a pretty busy semester. I know that the Pride of Oklahoma and OU Nightly can be pretty demanding. I really like your life motto and even the fact that you have a life motto is awesome.

  15. Hi, Dylan. I'm actually from a small town very close to you, Checotah. I'm sure you've heard of it since you have to drive right by it to get to Norman. I also enjoy reading and watching the news. I probably don't watch it near as much as you do but I watch it usually twice a day and read throughout the day. Other than that I don't watch much TV to do anything on a computer except school work. It was nice to meet you and good luck on your future plans.

  16. Hi Dylan! Nice to meet you! I have the same reason as you for taking this class. I really like it also. You have such an interesting hobby, because I tend to just watch tv or something in my free time. I really really like your life motto. It makes so much sense and they are great words to live by. Good luck on your future. Hope you achieve every goals that you have!

  17. Hi Dylan,
It’s awesome that you like reading so much. I’m a big reader myself, at least when I’m not crazy busy with school work. That is so exciting that you got to go to Seville for a while. I’m getting ready to travel to Europe in about a month, and I am so excited. It’s cool to hear that other people have enjoyed it so much!

  18. Hi Dylan,
I think it is really cool that you are a news anchor for OU nightly. It must be really good experience for what you want to do with your career. I like that you were honest as to why you are taking the class and it is very similar to why I did as well. As a biology major, it was nice to take a break from the science world and let the creative juices flow.

  20. Hi Dylan!!!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE BIG BROTHER TOO! I would love to be on the show one season! What did you think of this past season?! I really loved Johnny Mac, Jason, and James! I also really agree about what you said about this class helping make your writing more creative. It certainly has been a pleasure to write fun stories instead of scholarly essays! Hope you have a great rest of the semester and always remember....expect the unexpected!

  21. Hey Dylan, It’s nice to meet you. I am also a Gaylord student. I think it’s great that you studied abroad. I did as well and feel it is an experience everyone should get. I went to Barcelona, Spain while I was studying in Germany. I love Europe and can’t wait to go back. My parents are taking me for Graduation and I am so excited.
